Our Statement on the Ruling to End Affirmative Action

Dear Friends and Partners of Praxis:

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that universities cannot use race as a factor in the admissions process. Students for Fair Admissions brought the lawsuit to the Court, a coalition created to roll back affirmative action and decades of progress and educational opportunity for students of color.

We at The Praxis Project recognize that the Supreme Court's verdict—one with profound implications for higher education and our society as a whole—profoundly impacts racial equity, especially in bolstering Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders. The ruling reaffirms the existence of systemic racism and underscores the persistent racial divide in our country.

Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice, once said, “In recognizing the humanity of our fellow beings, we pay ourselves the highest tribute.” Justice Marshall's quote elevates the principles of equity, justice, and the universal respect for human dignity that The Praxis Project champions. We have been at the forefront of building healthy communities for over twenty years by transforming the power relationships and structures that affect our lives and communities.

Our commitment to these principles remains unwavering, especially in light of the systemic challenges this ruling may intensify. We are motivated to double down on efforts to support policy advocacy and local organizing as part of a comprehensive strategy for change.

Our work aims to support policy advocacy and local organizing. We emphasize developing fields of work that encourage multi-level, trans-disciplinary learning and collaboration across issues, the country, and the globe. This work is more pertinent than ever in the challenges our communities face in our efforts to survive and thrive.

In response to the SCOTUS ruling, we pledge to continue our work to break down these barriers, focusing our efforts on building local power through initiatives that advance our democracy. By collaborating, uplifting voices, forging shared visions, and implementing disruptive, cutting-edge work, we can build the futures we want to see in our communities.

Thank you for your continued partnership and belief in our mission.

With determination,

The Praxis Project Team
