Praxis’ movement building Fiscal Sponsorship

FISCAL SPONSORSHIP INQUIRY

As part of the Praxis Project’s efforts to build power in communities to achieve health justice, we offer comprehensive fiscal sponsorship. Praxis generally sponsors new work in need of time-limited incubation as well as more established grassroots projects that prefer to keep focused on programmatic work. Via Praxis fiscal sponsorship, projects receive operational and organizational development support as well as access to the Praxis network, and donors and funders can provide support with charitable contributions and grants.

Fiscal sponsorship is well-suited to responding to emerging critical issues and to time-limited projects, though Praxis fiscal sponsorship takes the form of sustained relationships that advance both the project’s and Praxis’ mission.

Praxis’ approach–called movement building fiscal sponsorship–seeks to build stronger movements and communities by reimagining the relationship between fiscal sponsor and project. Please review our values and principles before continuing.

Praxis is currently accepting fiscal sponsorship inquiries. If you believe your work may be a good fit for fiscal sponsorship and for us, please carefully consider the basic qualifications below before completing the inquiry form to request an introductory conversation about your project. We look forward to hearing from you.

  1. Your work is charitable in nature and furthers Praxis’ mission to build healthy communities. Clear mission alignment with Praxis and a strategy that addresses at least one social determinant of health are requirements for consideration.

  2. Your work is focused on building power within communities and is committed to systems change. Your work may also have a mutual aid component that is directly connected to building power. Praxis doesn’t fiscally sponsor organizations that only provide direct services, including clinical health services.

  3. You have a realistic plan to execute your project’s activities. If you would like to submit additional materials related to your plan (i.e. budget, a grant application you’ve drafted, etc.)

  4. You have a staffing plan that includes adequate human resources to dedicate to your project and to managing a hands-on, mutually-supportive and responsive relationship with Praxis.

  5. You have a one-year budget prepared for your project and ideally some funding already available or committed by donors. Praxis does not currently have set minimums for first-year budget size or available funding, but we cannot expense funds on behalf of the project until financial resources have been raised.

  6. You have an appreciation for the importance of basic financial management concepts and are committed to ensuring the solvency and financial sustainability of your project in partnership with Praxis. We’ll need you to review bank statements and partner with us in the financial management of the project, and we do provide support in this area.

  7. You understand that Praxis will take a mutually agreed-upon partnership fee from grants and contributions to offset its fiscal sponsorship costs. Fee levels vary based on the nature and complexity of your work and the level of service and support provided by Praxis, and are reassessed on a regular basis given that these factors tend to change over time. Administrative fees generally range between 10% and 15% of revenue and additional fees to cover bank charges, insurance, etc. may also be applied.

Movement building fiscal sponsorship is not professional services. It invests in movement capacity. Please review our values and principles to see if they match your expectations and needs before submitting an inquiry.
