Riya Mahtani is from New York City and is a rising sophomore at Cornell University where she is planning on majoring in Industrial Labor Relations and minoring in Environment and Sustainability. She began her work in social justice at the start of her high school career where she initially focused on racial justice issues. Her experience interning at the ACLU and being involved in school organizations like Women of Color and South Asian Affairs seeded her passion for racial justice. In addition, she became involved in environmental justice during her freshman year in college where she was selected to join her school’s Committee for Environmental Responsibility. She is very passionate about combining the issues of racial, health, and environmental justice in her work. At The Praxis Project, Riya is a Health Justice Intern where she hopes to gain experience working closely with her team to decolonize research by highlighting the voices of those who are often silenced in academia and mainstream media. When she is not working, Riya loves to explore cuisines from around the world, read, and spend time with family and friends.
