Cultural identity refers to individuals having the ability to creatively express and celebrate their culture, history and traditions. It also calls for arts and culture to positively reflect and value the backgrounds of all community residents. Positive reflections of cultural identities encourage health because they promote a sense of pride and community connection among residents. Only 24% of Hispanic adults say that the prefer the term “Hispanic” or “Latino”.(1) The Census has received backlash for trying to group individuals from different Latin American countries into one group as many of them identify more with their distinct cultures, languages, and social norms. Many people from lgbtq communities have added to their own cultures to be reflective and inclusive of their existence. From creating new inclusive language such as Latinx instead of using the binary Latino/Latina.
