POSITION: Field Organizer
TYPE: Full Time (Exempt) With Benefits
REPORTS TO: Executive Director/Deputy Director
LOCATION: Oakland, CA or Washington, DC
This position is primarily responsible for building and maintaining relationships with our partners to uphold Praxis Project’s mission—to build healthy communities by transforming the power relationships and structures that affect our lives and communities. This position will also be responsible for advancing the organization’s mission by establishing and sustaining relationships with organizations, leaders and key constituencies to improve the field’s capacity to promote health justice by performing the following duties.
The Praxis Project is a national movement support intermediary committed to building capacity for social change. Our emphasis is on developing fields of work in ways that encourage multilevel, trans-disciplinary learning and collaboration across issues, across the country, and across the globe. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Coordinates with Praxis staff to develop and maintain a national network of movement organizations including community-based groups, local and regional networks, and individuals that are working to improve local conditions for health justice.
- Works closely with partner organizations’ leaders, their staff, and their local community networks to recruit and maintain relationships through personal visits, phoning, social media, digital webinars, and in-person meetings.
- Organizes convening’s with constituency groups for peer-to-peer learning and skill building exchanges.
- Plans activities that maintain and expand an effective and ongoing network by increasing organizations’ involvement in capacity-building activities and collaboration.
- Coordinates strategic outreach plan and implementation to ensure a broad cross-section of organizations participate in Roots and Remedies national gathering.
- Develops organizing materials including maps, fliers, fact sheets, sign-on campaigns, etc.
- Performs rigorous tracking and reporting of ongoing work and results, database maintenance and work planning.
- Monitors the social justice and public health landscape by tracking social media and communicating with various constituencies to identify issues, activities, trends and flashpoints as the basis of individualizing support plans.
- Works with leading community organizing non-profits to promote best practices for the public health and social justice fields.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks; where applicable.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
3 years of related experience and/or training in community organizing or public health education; Bachelor’s degree (B.A. /B.S.) from a four-year college or university is desired; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to facilitate meetings using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective presentations on controversial or complex topics to Praxis peers, network partners, and/or community residents.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Spreadsheet Software (Excel); Word Processing Software (Word); Electronic Mail Software (Outlook, Gmail); Presentation software (PowerPoint); and Social Media (Facebook and Twitter).
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Valid drivers’ license.
OTHER SKILL, ABILITIES, AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Conduct a power analysis and political landscape assessment from data collected/researched.
- Internal Working Relationships – Motivates and engages to promote goals.
- Strong social skills – Promotes relationships that have trust, accountability and effective communication.
- Has in-depth understanding of the health justice environment and effective strategic planning for advancing the mission.
- At least 3 years’ prior experience as a community organizer.
- Advanced capacity or fluent in a written and oral language other than English is desired.
- Commitment to the principles and goals of The Praxis Project.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to work with diverse people communities and cultures.
- Hardworking, self-disciplined, and works well under pressure.
- Willing to work some evenings and some Saturdays.
- Knowledge of the political landscape and issues affecting low-income communities and people of color is a plus.
