The Muscogee (Creek) Nation is located in the Northeast
section of Oklahoma. MCN's Tribal land base is eleven counties, approximately
12,000 square miles.
Five of the eleven counties are recognized as "Health Professional Shortage
Areas", the highest level of "medically underserved or needy." Creek
Tribal membership is approximately 45,000 but its Health Division serves
all tribes through four clinics and one community hospital.
The Tobacco Program was established in 1999 through the Tribal National Council signing NCA 99-39. This ordinance of the Creek Constitution earmarks one penny from each pack of cigarettes sold to go specifically toward tobacco health education. The Tobacco Health Education Committee in conjunction with a grant from the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) put in place a full time program to educate American Indian/Alaska Natives of all ages on the harmful effects of commercial tobacco while encouraging tobaccos' sacred ceremonial use. Its vision is to eliminate commercial tobacco abuse for all Oklahoma Natives.
