Millions of American women would lose access to affordable health care coverage if the Supreme Court strikes down Obamacare, a new report by Jessica Arons from the Center for American Progress argues. Since women are more likely to consume health care services, use prescription medication, suffer from chronic illness, and face discrimination in the individual health market, they “will suffer the most” from a negative Court decision.

A BART station agent was fired for giving unused train tickets to a 16-year-old boy in need to help him pay for his commute to school, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Jim Stanek, 66, received a letter from BART informing him of his termination after he was caught supplying the teen with $300 worth of tickets to get to school. more

Just two weeks ago a Rasmussen poll showed 64 percent of Americans believe voter fraud exists. This poll was a major hit with the folks at the pro-voter ID True the Vote conference held over the weekend in Houston. No less than three speakers mentioned it to the crowd of roughly 200 attendees.

The wealthy are nostalgic for the power they enjoyed when most states limited voting to landed gentry. Republicans are helping them return America to those plutocratic days by passing voter identification laws constraining suffrage by the 99 percent. Country club conservatives are converting voting from a universal right of citizenship to a privilege exclusive to select society members. more

Slacktivists are the hipsters of the digital world: everybody recognises them but no one claims to be one. The term likely predates the internet campaigns with which it is now associated - whereas once bumper stickers and buttons sufficed to show conviction, there are now groups to join, videos to share, causes to like, and other static virtual entities whose worth is calculated in clicks.

A popular Change.org petition had been signed over 26,600 times in only 48 hours then suddenly drops to just over 14,750.  Why?  The petition had been expected to surpass 35,000 by Friday morning. Change.org has not responded to our request for comment but one thing appears clear, this was no accident. more

North Chicago’s Be Well-Lake County aims to increase access to healthy food for Type 2 diabetics and others in food deserts. “It provides diabetes care and education for medically underserved patients in North Chicago.” Other similar programs have emerged where convenience stores participate in getting residents more access to healthy foods. For instance, convenience store Mi Mexico in Mount Prospect in Chicago participates in the Healthy HotSpot Corner Store pilot program, which is coordinated by Communities Putting Prevention to Work.
